Is AI really going to take all our jobs?
AI otherwise known as artificial intelligence is the ability of a computational system to perform tasks associated with human intelligence like learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception and decision-making. It is common knowledge that AI models are slowly improving, giving more accurate answers. Does this pose a threat to jobs?
Safe jobs (For now)
Well, not really. As of now, most jobs are secure, from business management to healthcare to sports to other creative fields. And these will be there for quite a long time due to the physical presence required to do some jobs and the thinking of a human brain along with its emotional intelligence and creativity, which, as of now has not been achieved by AI.
The risky side
However, it is uncertain to say that no jobs will be replaced. It is predicted that in 2025 alone some portion of jobs like manufacturing, commerce, translators, etc, would be replaced by AI. And this is already being implemented with a 42% decrease in employment in manual quality control due to AI inspection systems, 1 in 4 dispatching roles being automated due to AI route optimization tools in large logistic companies, and a 41% drop in job openings for call center agents due to AI voice assistants and these are just some examples. Any jobs that contain routine tasks are relatively at a much higher risk to jobs that require emotional intelligence or heavy cognitive processing.
Moreover, with the development of physical AI and agentic AI, more jobs may be at risk, where according to Goldmen Sachs, 300 million jobs could be displaced by AI by 2030 and according to Mckinsey, 70% of firms will be using AI.
Job opportunities by AI
On the other hand, AI can also create more job opportunities such as AI engineers, data scientists, machine learning engineers and much more. It has already created 97 million new jobs by 2025 and is continuously growing, mainly in industries like healthcare, finance and technology said the 2023 report by Deloitte.
