Climate Change: The Good And The Bad
Climate change. The bringer of death. The one who creates extreme weather, floods and droughts. All these devastating things from just a few degrees of change, and its primary cause: us. All the excess pollution we emit, mainly in the form of carbon dioxide and methane, harm us and the environment in the long-term. It seems as if there is no positive side to this. But is there?
Cause
The main cause of climate change are the greenhouse gases we emit, which in turn results in the greenhouse effect, where sun rays like inside a greenhouse are trapped and so heat is trapped, which heats up the overall global environment. But this is not the only reason. There are also natural causes which gradually heat the earth although very minute. This includes volcanic eruptions which release high amounts of greenhouse gases and fluctuations in solar radiation.
Food security
Firstly, global warming aids agriculture. This is as higher temperature in the north lead to longer growing seasons and so greater productivity and so food security. This can reduce starvation and help with SDG 2. Moreover, studies prove that certain plants have a greater growth rate due to better photosynthesis in a high carbon dioxide level environment. However, other factors like water shortage and growth of invasive species must also be considered and accommodated to.
Bringer of life?
Secondly, due to shifting climate patterns, there may be bigger habitats for certain species, as they are more suited to live there rather than their previous location. This can increase the biodiversity of an area but may result in being a host of invasive species, bad for the food web in the area.
Are greenhouse gases really that bad?
Thirdly, the greenhouse effect is not as bad as it seems, to a moderate level. This is as without the greenhouse effect life as we see it would cease to exist and Earth itself would be a cold, barren planet. Without minimal heating caused due to the greenhouse effect, life cannot be sustained.
However, if the greenhouse effect is in excess, this is when it gets bad, really bad. The disasters we face now like extreme weather, forest fires, habitat loss are all caused by this excess.
Overall, climate change is deemed bad due to its vast consequences. If we do not stop emitting or reduce emitting greenhouse gases soon, this planet will be a hellscape.
